A computational grid is a collection of distributed computing resources, from personal computers to supercomputers, available over a local or wide area network that appear to an end user or application as one large virtual computing system. Grids support highly compute and data intensive applications including graphical modeling, simulations, image rendering, data mining and statistical reporting for commercial applications in aerospace, automotive, consumer products, engineering services, financial services, insurance, life sciences, manufacturing and pharmaceuticals. For business enterprises, computational and data grids harness the power of idle computing resources, such as Central Processing Unit cycles, memory and data storage, to: 1. Improve efficiency and utilization of all computing resources within an enterprise or extended enterprise to meet end user demands. 2. Solve problems that were previously unsolvable due to lack of adequate computing, data or storage resources. 3. Form virtual organizations that collaborate on common problems by enabling them to share applications and data. 4. Tackle very large problems demanding huge computing resources by enabling the aggregation of computing power, storage and other resources. 5. Help lower the total cost of computing by enabling the sharing, efficient optimization and overall management of those computing resources.
